Both use the same Unidyne III capsule, so their core sound is almost identical. The SM58 adds a spherical grille with a built-in pop filter for live vocals: it softens plosives and proximity effect. The SM57 has a flatter, more compact grille, ideal for close-miking instruments and amplifiers. For singing, the SM58; for instruments and amps, the SM57.
