Which one to choose

The HD 600 is the more neutral of the two: very accurate mids and restrained bass, which is why it has been a reference for mixing and dialogue editing for decades. The HD 650 has slightly fuller bass and smoother treble: it is less fatiguing over long sessions and more enjoyable for listening to music, at the cost of some precision when judging a mix. Being open-back, both leak sound in both directions and are no good for recording with a mic in the same room; and at 300 ohms they need an interface or headphone amp with a strong output, because a phone or laptop leaves them quiet. For mixing, the HD 600; for listening and working long hours with a warmer sound, the HD 650.
